Somaclonal variation in micropropagated Heliconia bihai cv. Lobster Claw I plantlets (Heliconiaceae) Scientia Agricola
Rodrigues,Paulo Hercílio Viegas.
The occurrence of somaclonal variation is described in various cultures of agronomic interest. Such variation can be of benefit in the development of new flower varieties. In this study, the occurrence of somaclonal variation in micropropagated changes of Heliconia bihai cv. Lobster Claw I was investigated. Stem apexes were introduced in MS culture media with the addition of 2.5 mg L-1 of benzylaminopure (BAP) and 500 mg L-1 of sodium cefotaxime. After selecting the apex stem, it was sub-cultivated in MS media and supplemented with 4.0 mg L-1 of BAP to induce side buds. To conduct the trial, 2,000 plants were selected and compared with plants originated from rhizomes. To calculate the percentage of the variants, the plant stature, the form and color of...

Surface circulation in the Eastern Mediterranean using drifters (2005-2007) ArchiMer
Gerin, R.; Poulain, P. -m.; Taupier-letage, Isabelle; Millot, C.; Ben Ismail, S.; Sammari, Cherif.
Within the framework of the EGITTO/EGYPT programs, the spatial structure and the temporal variability of the surface circulation in the eastern basin of the Mediterranean Sea was studied with satellite-tracked drifters. A total of 97 drifters drogued to 15-m nominal depth were released between September 2005 and March 2007, regularly along ship-of-opportunity routes in the Sicily Channel and within specific structures during dedicated campaigns in the Levantine sub-basin. This study complements previous ones in the former and in the Ionian, but it is the first one in the latter. After editing and low-pass filtering, the drifter trajectories were used to estimate pseudo-Eulerian statistics: mean current, variance ellipses, mean and eddy kinetic energies. A...

Surface flux and ocean heat transport convergence contributions to seasonal and interannual variations of ocean heat content ArchiMer
Roberts, C. D.; Palmer, M. D.; Allan, R. P.; Desbruyeres, Damien; Hyder, P.; Liu, C.; Smith, D..
We present an observation-based heat budget analysis for seasonal and interannual variations of ocean heat content (H) in the mixed layer (H-mld) and full-depth ocean (H-tot). Surface heat flux and ocean heat content estimates are combined using a novel Kalman smoother-based method. Regional contributions from ocean heat transport convergences are inferred as a residual and the dominant drivers of H-mld and H-tot are quantified for seasonal and interannual time scales. We find that non-Ekman ocean heat transport processes dominate H-mld variations in the equatorial oceans and regions of strong ocean currents and substantial eddy activity. In these locations, surface temperature anomalies generated by ocean dynamics result in turbulent flux anomalies that...

The anatomy of the king crab Hapalogaster mertensii Brandt, 1850 (Anomura: Paguroidea: Hapalogastridae): new insights into the evolutionary transformation of hermit crabs into king crabs Naturalis
Keiler, J.; Richter, S.; Wirkner, C.S..
The emergence of king crabs from a hermit crab-like ancestor is one of the most curious events in decapod evolution. King crabs comprise two taxa, Lithodidae and Hapalogastridae, and while lithodids have formed the focus of various anatomical studies, the internal anatomy of hapalogastrids has never been studied although this group might represent a more ancestral morphological condition within king crabs than lithodids do. To better understand the evolutionary transformation of pagurid-like hermit crabs into king crabs, we studied the hemolymph vascular system and associated organs of representatives of Hapalogaster and present here the first micro-computer tomography data pertaining to the internal anatomy of hapalogastrids. Our results for...

The Effect of Information and Market Access on Adopters' Income Level AgEcon
Nwankwo, Uche M.; Wolfgang, Bokelmann.
This paper is aimed at relating income fluctuation with adoptable innovations, adopter category and their access to some variables than those explained in the neoclassical economics principle of labor market demand and supply equilibrium. Using a quantitative and qualitative case study of some farmers in two States, we considered whether respondents are earning enough income and what constraints they face. The von Hipple’s lead user concept and decision model of risk aversion under uncertainty were used to explain causes of variability. Notably, farmers with enough steady income have access to market, various information and are less risk averse.

The Impact of Feedstock Supply and Petroleum Price Variability on Domestic Biofuel and Feedstock Markets – The Case of the United States AgEcon
Yano, Yuki; Blandford, David; Surry, Yves R..
The promotion of biofuel use in preference to traditional petroleum-based transportation fuel has linked agricultural commodity markets and energy markets more closely together. Biofuel policies can involve multiple policy instruments, but studies examining their effects on biofuel feedstock and energy markets are scarce. In addition, the impact of alternative policy approaches in the context of variability in petroleum prices and the supply of biofuel feedstock has received limited attention. Focusing on the current situation in the United States, in which prohibitively high duties prevent imports of ethanol, this paper examines how variability in the price of petroleum and corn supply affects domestic market variability under three types of domestic...

The Mediterranean Targeted Project MATER - a multiscale approach of the variability of a marine system - overview ArchiMer
Monaco, André; Peruzzi, Stefano.
The papers presented in this volume represent only a small part of the results obtained within the scope of the first integrated programme concerning the Mediterranean Sea. The latter is considered as a downscaled model of the ocean system, and a regional sea for the targeted projects supported by the European Commission. Whatever the domain is, the variability of the system appeared as a major feature. Consequently, this theme has been selected, among the main initial objectives, as the central subject of this volume. Spatial and temporal variabilities are considered, at different scales and at different (water, particles, sediment, trophic) levels of the marine ecosystem. In the hereafter contributions, one will find the long-term (millenar, secular and...

Typology of individual growth in sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) ArchiMer
Gardeur, J; Lemarie, Gilles; Coves, Denis; Boujard, Thierry.
The individual growth variability of passive integrated transponder tagged sea bass was studied using data sets from two different experiments. In experiment 1 (n = 485), fish submitted to different photoperiod regimes were held in fourteen groups of individual weight of 88 ± 13 g (mean ± SD). In experiment 2 (n = 748, initial weight 243 ± 30 g) fish were held in fifteen groups and had either free or restricted access to diets with three lipid levels. After adjustment for treatment and tank effects, individual growth curves were analysed using multivariate analysis (principal component analysis and clustering) and were modelled using the summary statistics technique. Different growth profiles where characterized. All of them appeared to be curvilinear....

Variability in Quality and Management Practices in the Mango Supply Chain from Costa Rica AgEcon
Zuniga-Arias, Guillermo; Ruben, Ruerd.
Produce quality is one of the features of any commodity that everyone has an opinion about, but quality is a complex concept. In one hand, quality is the consumer perception about a certain commodity an as well it is a relationship between all the intrinsic attributes of the commodity. It is argued that homogeneous management activities will increase the quality of the commodity. Reducing waste for example, but in a more generic way will reduce the variability of the commodity plus meeting the costumer needs and preferences. In this experimental article we try to disentangle the managerial activities that have an effect on the variability of the quality. For this purpose we have make use of the dispersion statistics...

Variability of mechanical properties of flax fibres for composite reinforcement. A review ArchiMer
Baley, Christophe; Gomina, Moussa; Breard, Joel; Bourmaud, Alain; Davies, Peter.
Flax fibres are a promising reinforcement in the development of biocomposites and are finding new applications in transport structures. However, there is a perceived problem with plant fibres related to the variability of the properties of these natural materials. This paper describes the factors which affect variability, from plant growth conditions to fibre sampling and testing. A large number of test results are presented (characterization of elementary fibres, bundles, assemblies of bundles, and unidirectional composites), and it is shown that provided fibre supply is carefully controlled, characterization procedures are appropriate, and manufacturing processes are optimal then excellent composite properties can be achieved with low variability.

Variability of Vernier acuity measurements in untrained subjects of different ages BJMBR
Abbud,C.M.M.; Cruz,A.A.V..
The Vernier acuity of 50 normal untrained subjects (20 males and 30 females) was measured by the method of adjustment. Subjects were divided into five age ranges with 10 subjects in each age group: 5-10, 11-20, 21-30, 31-40, and 41-50 years. All subjects had normal visual acuity (20/20) and volunteered to participate in the experiment. Children were selected from a local school and adults recruited from the technical staff of the Department of Ophthalmology of the School of Medicine. Vernier acuity was higher in adults compared to children. Intraindividual variability was high and it was estimated that for most individuals of all age groups a range of 100 to 700 trials was necessary to obtain a mean with a precision of 10%. These results suggest that...

Hydrodynamic Ocean Circulation Models and Lagrangian particle tracking models are valuable tools e.g. in coastal ecology to identify the connectivity between offshore spawning and coastal nursery areas of commercially important fish, for risk assessment and more for defining or evaluating marine protected areas. Most studies are based on only one model and do not provide levels of uncertainty. Here this uncertainty was addressed by applying a suite of 11 North Sea models to test what variability can be expected concerning connectivity. Different notional test cases were calculated related to three important and well-studied North Sea fish species: herring (Clupea harengus), and the flatfishes sole (Solea solea) and plaice (Pleuronectes platessa). For sole...
